If you’re like me, you’ve been counting down the seconds until school starts.
Yes, I love my children, and yes, I also love spending time with them when they’re on summer break (Disney World, anyone?) but you know what else I love?
Wine tastings in the middle of the school day. Renewed focus on my wine business because the house is quiet. Cooler weather that reminds everyone it’s almost time to hunker down and get cozy with a red blend.
Oh hells yes, my friends! We are entering the best time of year to be a Wine Shop at Home consultant.
See, here’s a little secret about back to school season: September is THE MONTH to kick off wine sales. Seriously. Early autumn people start thinking about holiday wine (hello, Corporate Gift Accounts), deep reds and romantic nights in front of the fireplace.
So, ready to take advantage of the seasonal change? Here are my top three tips.
Tip #1: Everyone Loves Wine Tasting During the Day
Parents of school-aged children secretly love to do wine tastings during the day when their kids are out of the house. Why? Because they get to hang out, have fun and take a little break without missing any family time.
Most parents really appreciate the opportunity to kick back with other adults, and the fact that it’s during the day feels just naughty enough that it’s super appealing. Even some offices will open their doors for a mid-day wine break (maybe not the dentist, that could be painful ha ha)
Bonus points: have you recently met some families that are new to your child’s school? Be sure to invite those moms and dads – they’ll really appreciate your efforts to reach out and connect!
Tip #2: Carry Your Business Cards with You
It might feel like a lot during the morning rush to school, but don’t forget to put your business cards in your bag before you leave the house! Those little gems could have a wonderful long-term impact on your bottom line, so be sure to have them with you at all times.
Bonus points: When you meet another parent who asks for your card, be sure to also get their contact information, too. When you have theirs, the ball is in your court and you can control how soon you follow up (i.e., no more missed connections).
Tip #3: Timing is Everything
Truly, timing is everything right now. Get your butt in gear the first week of school and it will pay off! Wait much longer and you’ll miss the window. Even if all you do is invite the new moms to your home for a tasting and somehow mention that you also do corporate gifting, it could pay off big time.
Remember: sometimes you won’t see the fruits of your labor right away. Sometimes you’ll get a phone call out of the blue from someone you met a couple months ago. But I promise, if you put in some legwork now, it will pay off.
Bonus points: Set aside some time on your calendar to work on your business. Even if it’s only an hour a day, do it!
