So you went for it – gave direct sales a shot – and you failed. For a flurry of reasons (or what I like call excuses), it didn’t work out of you.
That does not mean that your singular example is a standard for the direct sales business model. Ironically, the people who are quickest to judge or dismiss direct selling as a viable opportunity are often those who have tried it but ultimately flopped. Here’s what I say to that…
Hey nay-sayers! Stop your raining, my parade is fabulously successful!
Yoga and Direct Sales…Confused? Don’t be – Here’s Why…
Someone’s nonfulfillment with direct sales is no different than my experience with Yoga. In short, I gave it a go but it didn’t work for me. I didn’t understand it or enjoy it, it made me uncomfortable, I didn’t see benefit, I’m not into chanting, and I have no desire to try it again. I am clearly missing the OM gene.
But here’s the deal: I don’t go around telling the whole world and universe that Yoga doesn’t work because I had a less than ideal experience.
Direct Sales Internet Back Talk – Put a Cork in it!
There have been a rash of blog posts authored by people who are complain that they dislike their friends selling things. There’s even a post ranting about how direct selling is not a “real business,” in that you are leveraging your friendships (here’s what I say to THAT).
Don’t be discouraged by this – there’s been a few positive posts, too, where people say they admire direct sales, but more often than not they’re negative.
It is true that someone new to direct selling can over-post or be very persistent with their friends and family. For me, this was not the case. My husband is in the Navy and we had just moved to a new area where I didn’t have any friends or family nearby to build the foundation of my direct sales business with. Instead, I started my business with strangers, setting up vendor booths and networking. Much like a traditional business, I hussled! I didn’t have my friends and family for security…on the flip side, the networking led me to some of my closest friends today. Lesley, Lesley and Jen I’m talking about YOU!
The Secret to Success without the Stress
It’s simple: you don’t have bug your friends and family to start this business. Hey – it doesn’t matter what industry we are talking about, there will always be people not good at what they do who abuse their friendships!
You know I can’t stand yoga, but do you hear me telling people that Yoga sucks? No! It’s not my cup of tea, but I won’t discredit all the people that enjoy it. I’m not resentful of the fact that Yoga is effective for my friends but not for me. I’m not going to shut down someone’s love for Yoga because I don’t share the same passion!
When it comes down to it, all these haters are just trash-talking the business model. It’s really difficult if your close friends, your neighbor or your spouse aren’t being supportive of your efforts, If that’s the case, I’m sorry. Maybe you can send them to this post so they can see that we all can’t be Yogis, or direct sales super stars and it’s OK.
And by the way, it’s okay to ask your friends/family/neighbors/spouse to be more supportive. You can read about it HERE.
