WineShop at Home is a Direct Sales company, but people often mistake us for a Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) company. People ask me all the time what makes us different from an MLM, so let’s clear things up once and for all!
MLM vs. Direct Sales
At the end of the day, we’re in the same industry, but Direct Sales is a whole different animal.
Recruiting
For starters, MLMs put a big emphasis on recruiting. Often, the only way to really earn any kind of significant money with an MLM is to bring people onto your team whereas in a business like WineShop, you can definitely earn a significant income through your sales alone. To me, this is really important because there are many people who don’t want to engage in the recruiting aspect of the business – they just want to talk about, enjoy and sell wine, and that’s just fine. I would love you on my team!
Bottom Line
In MLMs, you see a huge, frantic push toward turning a profit. Lots of talk about big money, fancy lifestyle, that sort of stuff. With WineShop at home (and Direct Sales in general), we obviously still earn money but we’re more socially and emotionally driven – meaning we put our relationships first. In other words, it’s unlikely that you’ll be pushed quit your job, buy the fancy car or be flashy with WineShop at Home. That’s not always the case with other companies. Often in MLM, the “fancy stuff” is the marker for success. Our business CAN be life changing and lead to lots of life upgrades (one consultant cried when she could hire a housekeeper weekly, that’s the upgrade SHE needed) but it doesn’t need to be flashy like a Gucci bag, it can be the joy of a debt free Christmas.
Socializing
A major aspect of this business is the socializing. Our teams are close, we do a lot of social activities together, and sometimes consultants even get so focused on the fun part of the business that I have to gently remind them of our underlying, super successful mantra: book, sell, recruit. Rinse and repeat.
Personal Growth & Empowerment
Everyone comes to the business with their own background, and every person who becomes a WineShop at Home consultant will experience their own unique challenges. The most incredible thing I’ve gotten from WineShop has been the opportunity for personal growth & empowerment, and that opportunity is facilitated by the company. We challenge our consultants to ask themselves: what’s working? What’s not working, and what do you need to do to get better results?
To sum it up, I’d characterize Direct Sales to be much more socially-oriented, much more collaborative and supportive, and ultimately more successful – because people do business with people they like. And when you nurture your relationships, you’ll get more opportunities.
