Sales, or the concept of “selling something,” is basically the foundation of earning money at its core. Every single job has an aspect of selling to it, whether you’re a receptionist, a firefighter or a WineShop at Home consultant.
“But, Diane, how does being a firefighter have anything to do with sales?”
Well, you had to get the job, didn’t you? You had to sell the boss man on how great you’d be in the first place so he’d hire you!
See, here’s the thing: sales isn’t so much about selling the product as it is about selling you. Do people like you, know you, trust you? When they do, you’ll sell more wine. When they don’t, you won’t.
If you’ve ever been on a date you know this is true. When you’re sitting across the table from somebody making small talk about your lives and your dreams and considering whether you want to make babies with this person, you’re really selling them on who you are – and they’re doing the same thing with you.
So, if you’re married, have ever been married, are dating someone or have ever dated someone, you rock at sales and you can do it in your WineShop at Home business, too.
But I’m Not a Sales Person!
If I had a sip of wine for every time somebody said, “Diane, I love the idea of this business but I’m not a salesperson,” I would be flat-out drunk as a skunk every day.
And yet – WineShop at Home continues to grow, thrive and bring more benefit to more people with each passing day!
We are all so afraid of the idea of “selling” – and believe me, I get it, I’ve felt that fear too – but we don’t realize that selling is something that we do naturally in our lives. When you smile at a stranger you’re selling. When you call your mom to try and get her to come visit (“California is so nice in February, Mom!”) you’re selling. When you find new ways to get your kids to eat vegetables, (“When you eat broccoli, you’re basically a dinosaur eating a tree…”) you’re selling.
And you know what? You’re great at it. But if you still don’t believe me, there’s good news: WineShop at Home will give you a script for selling and I promise you won’t turn into the timeshare sales guy who trapped you in a room.
You can literally go to a tasting with a script memorized, perform the script, and you will likely sell wine.
You’re Not in Sales – You’re in Matchmaking
If you still feel hung up on the whole “sales” thing, let’s try a mindset shift. When you give your WineShop at Home presentation, the truth is that you’re not really selling – you’re matchmaking.
You can’t force someone to purchase wine, but you can present the options to the group and let people choose the wines that they like best. They’re already there because they like wine, and they know that it’s a tasting – which in itself implies that there will be wine for sale.
Trust me, they know what they’re in for and they chose to be there on purpose!
Personally, I like to think of it this way: I’m not in sales. I do like wine, though, and I like the experience of sharing my favorite wines with other people who like wine. I honestly don’t want to force someone to buy something from me – but if I see that somebody is present who really enjoys a certain wine, why wouldn’t I offer him or her the opportunity to purchase more of that wine?
And, if I’m feeling especially nervous about making my presentation, I might even open the tasting with something like, “Hey, I’m not going to spend the next hour “selling” you wine. Yes, I am here to sell wine and book tastings, but I don’t want you to worry that this is going to be a sell-fest. We’re going spend the next hour trying some wines, laughing, learning, having fun, and in the end I will help you place your order and find the best options.” With that disclaimer, the tension instantly flies out the window.
See? Easy!
