WineShop at Home might be a home-based business but not all the work I do can be done “at home”. I get questions from other moms wondering if I feel guilty about the trips I take, the nights I’m not around because I’m doing a tasting or even the phone calls I’m on. They say, “Oh, I could never leave my family for work the way you do. Don’t you feel guilty?”
My response? Hello no!
We All Feel Guilty All The Time
If you’re a mom, you feel guilty. All the time. About everything. You wonder if you’re making the right choices for your kids. You wonder if you’re spending enough time with them, if you’re teaching them all they need to know. You question your choices.
That’s just the reality of being a mom.
So when women ask me if I feel guilty, I understand the question. I get that people see what I’m doing and think that it must be hard to spend so much time away from my family. But here’s the truth: I get to be with my kids anytime I want! So no, it’s not hard and my kids get to learn balance and choices and hopefully business skills.
You Decide When to Be Home
I was talking to a WineShop rep whose kids were off for Election Day. She was so happy because she was able to stay home with them that day, thanks to WineShop’s flexibility. She planned a whole fun day just for them.
What working parent can wake up and just decide to take the day off? Not many that I know and so for me, it’s worth the trade off.
In this business, I get to decide when I’m spending time with my kids and when I’m taking time for myself. I love my kids and I’m grateful to have them in my life but I’m also grateful for the opportunities that having a business gives ME.
WineShop often allows me the chance to travel for a few days or spend time with my WineShop at Home leaders. To “refill my (ME) cup.”
I’m not going to lie, when I travel for work and I get to eat an entire meal without someone stealing my food or whining or spilling their own food all over their shirt or mine… what can I say? It’s a nice little break from parenthood.
You’re Not the Bad Mom
I get the “guilt” question from a lot of people. Not just from women in other work-at-home industries, but from moms who aren’t involved with direct sales at all.
I can never tell exactly where that question is coming from but it seems to me that they’re either asking because they feel guilty themselves or they’re testing the waters to see if a direct sales job is right for them. Sometimes it feels like they’re asking because they’re trying to make me feel guilty. Luckily, I don’t!
