Over the last ten years, I’ve had great success with WineShop at Home, but it didn’t come without consistent effort. And yes, I failed many times at many aspects of the business.
However, I don’t define myself by the things that went right and how I picked myself back up – I choose to define myself by my refusal to fail even when things were looking glum (and believe me, there were certainly times when things looked exceptionally glum).
I’ve realized that expecting perfection is unrealistic. Failing is part of life but when you refuse to accept failure as the outcome, amazing things start to happen. So if you’ve ever experienced a setback (and if you haven’t, I want your magic potion please!), dust yourself off and keeping moving forward. Don’t hide from the failure because success with your business is coming around the corner.
Finding a Balance Between Life and WineShop at Home
Recently I was traveling for work and realized how far behind I am in the goals I have set for myself. Honestly, in the last couple of months, life has gotten in the way, so so so in the way.
Crazy travel schedules for my husband and I, rental properties turning over, renting my house while selling another, renovating an entire house, work, kids, and visiting my oldest friend in Hawaii… the perfect storm that results in falling behind in my WineShop goals (and a few personal goals too).
That’s when all my doubts started creeping in. Thoughts like, “I’m not going to make the goals I set for myself. I have not been doing the work that I should have done. Should I even do this anymore? Should I retire? Can I still DO THIS??”
Yikes!
In the midst of these thoughts, suddenly it dawned on me, “Wait a second. I don’t have to succeed at everything all the time!” I’m just distracted.
Realign Your Goals To Find Success
When my plate is overflowing I ask myself, “Do I need to realign my goals?”
I say it all the time: I’m not the best consultant, (heck, I wrote an entire blog about how I’m not the greatest at sales and follow up) however, I ALWAYS pick myself back up and examine my goals. I put a microscope to it in order to ensure that I’m still on track and that I WANT to be ON this track.
Be willing to be fully honest with yourself. Warning: you don’t always get the answer you want! Consultants offer loads of reasons as to why they aren’t meeting their goals: family, pregnancy, travel, work and so on. I hear these sorts of excuses every day.
The truth is, excuses are simply choosing not to do the work or dedicating the time to making sure it can get done. If you can allow yourself to look in the mirror and say, “I’m the reason I’m not meeting my goals. Yes, me!” you empower yourself to actually make a different choice. Keep the goals, change them, whatever.
Playing the blame game only leads to more unmet goals, so be honest with yourself! Is this just an excuse?
You are Defined by the Obstacles You Overcome
I choose not to be defined solely by the things that work, I choose to be defined by the things I push through. I don’t always hit home runs, but I do NOT make excuses. Do I wish my speaking skills were stronger? YEP! Do I wish I hadn’t fallen behind on the goals I set for myself? Totally yes! Do I wish I didn’t finish that bottle of red and stayed up till midnight last night? Groan…maybe?? Even tired, frustrated and scared, I pick myself up, move on, and keep moving forward.
In the wise words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “A woman is like a tea bag; you never know how strong she is until she’s in hot water”.
