“To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.”
-Buddha
In my time working for WineShop at Home, I have been amazed to discover over and over again that the health of my business often correlates directly with my personal health and wellbeing.
It’s really true that when your body is strong, healthy and vibrant, you can think more clearly, you have more energy, and you’ll be more creative. Have you ever noticed this?
So, if you’re experiencing difficulty in your business – say you don’t have many tastings on your calendar, or you feel stuck in the area of making sales and recruiting new consultants – maybe it’s time to take a look at your health habits.
Take Care of You, First
Sometimes “fixing” your business requires taking care of you, first. When you consistently eat healthy, exercise, drink plenty of water and get lots of sleep, you’ll have the energy and drive to do what you need to do to move your business forward.
Honestly, a big part of running a successful business is personal growth. Yes, you’ll come up against personal blocks and obstacles. You’ll have to pick up the phone and make sales, which can be really difficult. You’ll have to talk to people about becoming consultants, which can feel confronting.
All those things require a certain amount of energy and if you’re not feeling great in your body, it can be difficult to conjure up the energy it takes to really go the extra mile.
Tips for Great Self-Care
If you’re ready to take your business to the next level, take your self-care to the next level. Here are my top tips:
- Get plenty of sleep. Really, sleep can make a huge difference! Did you know that the world’s top athletes often sleep upwards of 10 hours a night? They do that so their bodies can perform optimally. You’re no different: your brain needs to rest so that when you wake up, you can tackle the next day’s tasks.
- Exercise regularly. My greatest business growth comes when I’m taking care of myself, and that includes exercise. Back in June 2017 I was working out twice a day and I ended up having the best month – ever – at WineShop at Home.
- Drink lots of water. Staying hydrated is vital for all your physical systems to work properly, and especially when your job is to try new wines, you really want to make sure you’re drinking lots of water!
- Care for your body. I like to throw something extra in every month, like a manicure or getting a massage. It doesn’t have to be super expensive, but give yourself the opportunity to be pampered!
Okay, I have to say this: look, I’m not perfect. I don’t always follow these guidelines perfectly (I wish I did!). It’s an ongoing challenge and opportunity for growth, for all of us. We’re only human, after all.
Fitness People LOVE Wine!
One final note here – when you do start working out more and meeting more fitness people, it can be great for business! Fitness people, in general, make great clients. They love wine (think of the health benefits of red wine) and they love WineShop wine because we hold our products to such a high standard.
Not too long ago I did a tasting for a group of Bar Method instructors, and it was a blast!
There really is no downside to taking good care of yourself. It will benefit every area of your life, including your business.
