But most importantly, starting a business requires patience. And just because WineShop At Home is so ridiculously inexpensive a business to start (check out our starter kits at $300), it doesn’t mean that it takes any less time to grow into something truly profitable!
Where to Invest Your WineShop Time
Time is precious, and when you’re a business owner time really is money! I totally understand that it can be frustrating when you first start out: you want to see results right away…
…and in this business, you’ll see the fastest results when you get out there and lead tastings!
Generally a tasting takes about 2-3 hours and you’ll earn anywhere from $100-$250 depending on your sales and commission levels (and that’s just that night, it doesn’t count future sales, wine club residuals or potential team members you’ll meet). This is the perfect place to invest your time when you’re just starting out (and honestly, even when you’re further along in your journey, leading tastings is always going to be your fastest path to cash).
But if you’re really in the game for the long run and you want to build a healthy, reliable income through WineShop At Home, you’ve got to invest time in other areas of your business, as well.
Here are some areas that will give you a great return on your investment of time:
- Recruiting New Consultants. Yes, it will take some time to get your new recruits up and running. You’ll have to spend extra time on the phone with them as they navigate the obstacles of starting a business. Maybe they’ll shadow you for a few tastings and you’ll spend some time having a “recap” conversation afterwards. It may feel like you’re putting in a lot of time up front, but if your new consultant is successful, you’ll earn anywhere from 3-8% of their sales. I have team members that have been with me ALL of my 12+ years! That was time well spent (and still is!)
- Focus on Wine Club. In my opinion, Wine Club is the most severely underestimated source of income for WineShop at Home consultants. Think about it: sell it once, and you’ll bring in passive income for months – possibly even years!
- Build Better Sales + Interpersonal Skills. This will take time and sometimes money to invest in training opportunities and learning but in this business, being able to build and maintain relationships – with clients, colleagues and team leaders – is everything.
- Attend the WineShop at Home Trainings. Make sure you’re participating on the team calls, meetings and events. Together, we continue to learn, grow and refine our skills as sales consultants. Sometimes this takes time away from family or other interests but I can’t convey enough how important “connecting” in person is. It’s how we build vision, smooth transitions, set goals and see the bigger picture.
There’s No Magic Pill
But God, sometimes I wish there were (I also wish there was a magic pill for the last 10lbs but alas…. it’s just doing the work, no pill available)! When it comes down to it, if you want to build a business that generates $3,000-$10,000 per month (yes, that’s 100% possible), it will require that you build a strong calendar of tastings and a reliable team.
Over time, when you lay the foundation and develop the business, you’ll start to see some great results. Generally it’s at about the 6-12 month mark that you realize there’s more coming in than going out – meaning, more money is coming in than energy going out. You’re building traction.
You got this!
